The History of Blackjack

From the Desk Of the Gaming Guru 17/03/09

Tracing back the roots of Blackjack take you to disputed origins. Some sources claim that this game originated in France and some claim that it is from Spain. According to Wikipedia, “The first written reference of this game is found in a book by Miguel Cervantes (the author of Don Quixote)”. In his book, Cervantes documents a story of two thieves that mastered the art of cheating in the game “Veintiuna” which is Spanish for ‘21'. Hence, 21 which is the ancestor of Blackjack was played first during the early 17 th century in Spain and later references point to this game being played in France and called Vingt-et-un which is French for ‘21'.

Blackjack crosses the Atlantic

21 was brought to the United States in the 18 th Century but was not very well received by patrons to casinos at the time. In response to this, the Casinos (or gambling houses as they were called) offered huge bonus payout in order to attract more players to wager. One example of a bonus payout was a 10-to-1 payout if the player had an Ace of Spades and a Black Jack (A Jack of Clubs or Spades) and hence the term “Blackjack” was coined. These huge bonus payouts were soon becoming a liability to the Casinos and was soon abolished. The term “Blackjack” lived on and currently a Blackjack doesn't have to contain any black cards or any jacks at all. Slowly but surely, Blackjack was soon becoming a Casino favourite.

The rise of Blackjack

Gif BannersNowadays, Blackjack tables are found in virtually all Casinos (land and online). Much of its popularity is attributed to books that have been published such as Professor Edward Thorp's “Beat the Dealer” where he demonstrated to the public that Blackjack is game that can be beaten using statistics. Using Thorp's card counting methods, readers were able to add at least a 2% advantage against the house. The casinos had to respond by swinging the advantage in their favour by using more decks and ejecting suspected card counters.

Blackjack is a game of skill and luck. It is the only casino game that can be ‘beaten' in the long run and the short run if you play it right. There is a constant battle between casinos (land and online) and players trying to fiercely swing the advantage towards each other. That is the beauty of this game.
